“If you were to take a short walk from Brixton station, in inner-city south London, you may then be surprised to find there are stables among the tower blocks. They house a collection of horses, and caring for the animals is a large group of young people from the local area, tracksuited, city-raised and not what most people would think of as the horsey type. Horse riding, we tend to believe, is something for the elite, and takes place in a bucolic world of pony clubs and gymkhanas. Ebony Horse Club is different. It’s a charity that seeks to educate and empower young city-dwellers – some of them facing considerable challenges in their daily lives – through working with horses, and aims to inspire them to swap the street for the stables.
