New activity introduced at EHC. Pony Racing!
We are always looking for fun new activities to offer our members, especially activities which spark an interest in potential training and career options.
When the Pony Racing Authority approached us to see if we would be interested in introducing our young riders to the exciting world of pony racing we jumped at the chance!
Kicking off the first day of Ebony Horse Club's summer programme, five riders embarked on a course being run here in Brixton teaching them how to ride like professional jockeys, on our very own ponies.
The sessions are kindly being delivered by pony racing trainers Patrick and Julie Scott, from Appletree Stud in Banbury, Oxfordshire.
The first lesson saw pupils take part in a range of exercises which included time practising on space hoppers! Initially sceptical of their new mounts, riders were shown how the bouncy toys can be used to strengthen the leg muscles needed to help keep them balanced whilst riding 'out of the saddle' in the racing position.
At the end of the session, Patrick and Julie encouraged the group to keep practising for their next visit.
Since then, our members have been working on their position and balance, as well as learning how to hold the reins for racing and how to change hand positions to encourage the ponies to go even faster.
A huge thank you to the Pony Racing Authority for introducing us to Patrick and Julie and this exciting activity.
We look forward to seeing you on the race course soon!
